OPEN LETER TO GOVERNOR MIMIKO OF ONDO STATE ON PROPOSED IMPEACHMENT OF DEPUTY GOVERNOR! BY BARR. TOLU BABALEYE

OPEN LETER TO GOVERNOR MIMIKO OF ONDO STATE ON PROPOSED IMPEACHMENT OF DEPUTY GOVERNOR!

Your Excellency,
After the House of Assembly Election in Ondo State, I have returned to my base in Abuja to continue with my primary assignment of Law Practice but echoes from my Lovely Ondo State have refused to allow me concentrate without passing a comment on the political ongoings.

Within 24 hours after the election, I was duly informed that arrangements have been concluded to send the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Alh. Ali Olanusi, parking by way of impeachment. In order to facilitate that, the following immediate actions have been taken so far:

1. His convoy was said to have been attacked today with the aim of assassinating him between Iyeoma Plaza and Alagbaka Government House. It was said that the shooting took about 24 minutes of exchange of cross-fire between Political thugs and Deputy Governor's security operatives openly and in a broad day light to the extent that People along that axis scampered for safety.
2. After the Deputy Governor managed to escape and entered his quarters at Government House, it was said that Government House Maintenance officials went to the Deputy Governor's lodge to disconnect his light.
3. My source also informed me that a meeting is taking place right about now to perfect papers and obtain the signatures of House of Assembly members who shall resume plenary tomorrow and serve impeachment notice on the Deputy Governor.
4. Another meeting is said to be ongoing to agree and narrow down on the choice of new Deputy Governor from the list of 3 of which one is from Ikare, another one from Supare (where Olanusi hails from) while the third one is a serving Commissioner also from Akoko.
5. That some People were paid 10k each to go round the state capital today chanting "Ali Must Go"!

The above be as it may, I wish to put the following on record.

1. While I agree that impeachment is part of Democracy and our constitution, I wish to state that opening gun fire and disconnection of light to cause discomfort is unknown to the Constitution.
2. I wish to advise Gov. Mimiko to thread softly and live in Peace with Alh. Ali Olanusi his ally when it was tough during his days in the trenches while plotting the removal of Dr. Olusegun Agagu (The Atuluse and Architect of modern Ondo State).
3. I want Mr. Governor to look around and take a clue from Gov. Almakura of Nasarawa State and Gov. Wamako of Sokoto State whose Deputies have been in opposition party for two years running and the relationships are being managed in the best interest of those States.
4. I urge Dr. Mimiko to note that APC will take over in less than two months time and they can always find a means of taking revenge if he does anything now to one of their own because he is a Deputy Governor.
5. Gov. Mimiko ought to know that whoever must come to equity is required to come with clean hands. Mimiko himself decamped as a sitting Governor from LP to PDP (Ki lobo fi sori ti Inaki o fi sori?). Why must Olanusi be impeached for decamping to Another Party when Mimiko also did the same? Is it a question of who will bell the cat?
6. Mimiko should realise that Alh. Ali Olanusi has not been giving him problem(s) and he cannot be too sure of what will become of the new DG if this threat is eventually carried out (God Forbid!).
7. Mimiko ought to know that one can only know the beginning of War as the outcome and the end of war cannot be predicted! The impeachment is better imagined than executed. He should not underrate his Deputy.
8. Having won an election (either counterfeit or genuine) against all predictions and book makers, one would have expected Gov. Mimiko to be magnanimous in victory and avoid crisis as the task of removing his Deputy may not be that easy based on the Deputy's political tentacles both within and outside Ondo State.
9. Though the performance rating of the Governor might be low, I wish to give it to him that Ondo State has been peaceful as there has not been single politically related assassination and I urge the Governor to avoid what might lead to that like this threat of impeachment.
10. Mr. Governor should remember telling me personally during my meeting with him in my TAN days that ever since he started politics in 1983, he has never killed or directed that blood be shed or anyone be killed on his behalf hence God has been kind to him. This record seems to have been dented at the last concluded House of Assembly election at Ondo East as political thugs loyal to PDP were said to have lynched a helpless voter and maimed several others. If this impeachment threat continues, lives and properties may be lost and this will further dent the record of zero killing since 1983!
11. While Gov. Mimiko was congratulating Buhari on his electoral victory, he urged him to rule by abiding with Rules of Law. I urge Gov. Mimiko to act that precious advice NOW!
12. In the Punch Newspaper of 27th March, 2015, in your reaction, you said you wish Alh Olanusi well on his decampment from PDP to APC. Where do you put that "well wishes" now Mr Governor?

Based on the above, I urge Gov. Mimiko to end this theatre of absurdity and allow peace to rein in Ondo State as Baba Ali Olanusi cannot hurt a fly as Ondo State Deputy Governor in a party different from that of Mr. Governor because the Constitution only makes Deputy Governors "ExtraTyre".
Impeachment Plan is a joke carried too far!

I wish Ondo State all the best!
